Fine art and crafts are celebrated at the Bethesda Fine Arts Festival in May, which brings together over 100 of the nation's best artists and gives visitors a chance to sample local cuisine. In April, Bethesda attracts novelists, poets, journalists and children's authors for the Bethesda Literary Festival, an event featuring activities and workshops for visitors of all ages. Thursday evenings and Friday afternoons during May, June and July, the city hosts a summer concert series showcasing local and regional musicians playing styles ranging from jazz to rock to blues. For other arts performances, visitors can check out the Round House Theatre and the Imagination Stage.

Important institutions located in Bethesda include the National Institutes of Health , the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and the National Naval Medical Center commonly referred to as Bethesda Naval Hospita where many famous Americans have been treated. The headquarters of defense conglomerate Lockheed Martin and hotel and resort chains Marriott International and Host Hotels & Resorts are located in Bethesda.

Starting in the heart of downtown Bethesda is the Capital Crescent Trail which follows the old tracks of the B&O Railroad from Georgetown in Washington, D.C. to Silver Spring, MD. Bethesda is also home to several exclusive private clubs including Burning Tree and Bethesda Country Clubs, Congressional in nearby Potomac plus Chevy Chase and Columbia Country Clubs Chevy Chase.

Education

Many prestigious private college preparatory schools find their homes in Bethesda including the Landon School, Holton-Arms, Georgetown Preparatory School and Stone Ridge. In addition, Bethesda has many good middle schools. Among them Westland Middle School. Bethesda's primary public high schools were ranked by Newsweek Magazine in 2006 as among the best in the country. Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School was ranked 34th nationally, Walter Johnson High School ranked 101st and Walt Whitman High School was ranked 116th.
